Rider Sinbin’s scar rapidly sheds through his face, constantly running up and down like a lightning bolt. Underneath lies two monstrous eyes.  If you stare into his pupils for too long you can see the devil. His mouth stands quiet, while talking is easy. But when his mouth opens his white teeth shine like an angel.

He runs and plays with his niece and nephew.
“Let's do sprints! Ready… set… go!”
Running, running, and more running.
“Hey wait for me.” As he runs his leg flick up and hit him in the bum. His heart beats out of his chest, ba boom, ba boom, ba boom.

When he walks down the street people go “Wow, I wish I was him, it would be to be awesome if I was his friend.” All his mates wear different  clothes every day, and his mum and dad live in their own private mansion. Ever since he was a kid, people knew him from for how good he was at sports. His favorite sport is rugby.

He loves his country so he went to war. But people always wondered how he got his scar. The truth was never really found, but everyone still thought he was really cool.

We read an article about a fleet of research waka which spent two years criss crossing the Pacific ocean, observing rubbish. They noticed that if they found rubbish in the ocean, it usually meant they were getting close to land. Because of this, we infer that most rubbish in the ocean comes from land.

We wondered if the rubbish in our playground might have a similar trend.   We decided, before lunch on Wednesday last week, to go and find out.

We split the school into 12 sections on a map. Each section had a group of scientist (us!) to make observations and inferences.

We put a red dot on the map wherever we found a piece of rubbish and collected all the rubbish. After lunch we went back, and noted with a blue dot, any new rubbish found in our area. We also collected this rubbish. This is our map, showing where we found rubbish, both times.

Our observations and inferences:

The red dot rubbish (rubbish found before Lunch) is caught up in the fences and bushes, because the wind would have blown it around. Than it would have got stuck. Kids may have dropped it there at morning tea or lunch because they cannot be bothered going to the bin and putting it in their lunchbox.     

The spread of rubbish is different all around the school, most of the rubbish is found around the eating area because kids sit there and leave their rubbish where they were sitting.

Some areas attract more rubbish of certain types than others. The place that attracted the most rubbish is around Darren's shed area and this is because children drop their rubbish at morning tea time when they are running around, because this is a commonplace that children like to play. The area we call the “forest” behind He Tangata has a pathway that carries on towards Darren's shed and drop it when nobody's looking.
Most of our data is found to be correct, but some are not because lots of rubbish was placed in the same spot so we had to spread the dots out so we would know how many pieces of rubbish were found. The wind affects lots of the school because it gets blown into bushes and caught under buildings, and when the children walk around and the rubbish is in their pocket the wind blows the rubbish out of their pockets and onto the ground accidentally.

We have learnt a lot over this experience, about how dirty Waimairi school can be. It is really very disappointing because Waimairi is a lovely school, but our rubbish problem grows worse by the day. There is a few things we can do to solve this, why put rubbish on the ground when you can put it in the bin or keep it in your lunchbox. Don't have it hanging in your pockets work on putting it in the bin.  Also help others not forgetting if you see RUBBISH don't walk past put it in the bin you can always wash your hands afterwards. Overall in this experience we have learnt that we need to put RUBBISH in the BIN to make our world a good and cleaner place!

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

After we made these observations and inferences, we were left with questions as to why people in our school failed to put their rubbish in the bins! Why does so much end up back around the school after one break time? Maybe it is falling out of people's pockets? Perhaps it's the winds fault? Or maybe the students of Waimairi school are dropping it on purpose?

Since then, we have recorded how rubbish was dropped at morning tea and lunch. Basically, we spied on the school! We, as scientists, have completed an investigation into why rubbish is ending up on the ground. On Thursday the 18th of August, we went out at morning tea and lunchtime to make observations of you all, collecting data to find out how rubbish gets on the ground.

We split up into 12 groups. At morning tea we spread ourselves around the whole school to observe. At lunchtime we spread the 12 groups around the lunch eating areas and observed what happened to the rubbish.
We have made inferences from our observations and here is what we found:

At morning tea time, Waimairi school dropped 205 pieces of rubbish. That's 2 out of 5 people on average who dropped rubbish. 110 pieces of rubbish were dropped on purpose, which is more than half of the rubbish we observed being dropped. We also saw 46 pieces of rubbish dropped without the person realising that they had dropped it, often as they were walking.We also saw rubbish being dropped from pockets.

The places we found that rubbish had been dropped the most, were the Te Puna block, the walkway down to Ara Atu and the playground behind room 13. We think this might be because people playing in these areas may not understand why it is important to put rubbish in the bin. We also inferred that since there's big bushes at Ara Atu, people think they can hide their rubbish there.

Also, there is no rubbish bin in sight of the playground in these areas, so people lazily drop it instead. We think that most people do this because they think that they can hide it, or can get away with dropping it, even when they know it is wrong. And they do get away with it! Why don't people take a little walk over to the bin to put their rubbish where it belongs?

At lunchtime, 219 pieces of rubbish were dropped throughout the school JUST during lunch eating time. That's 2 out of every 5 people in the school on average. that is a large amount of people to be dropping rubbish.
From what we saw, 79 pieces of rubbish were dropped on purpose, and 44 were left where people were eating.

Just like at morning tea time, we think that around the school most of the people drop the rubbish because there's not enough rubbish bins around. Although there are already some bins, there only a few, and sometimes not in the best places.
We also think that some children might not be able to reach the bins because we observed the bins are quite a bit taller than some junior children. Younger students also may not understand why it is bad to leave rubbish on the ground.

We could maybe get more and smaller bins to show others that bins are valued around the school but we think most of the kids already know about why we shouldn't  drop rubbish - because it will cause lots of problems for the animals in our environment and make our school look messy.

We spotted some differences between Morning Tea and Lunchtime. At lunch-eating time, more pieces of rubbish were dropped than the whole of morning tea time, even though morning tea is longer than lunch eating time. We think that more rubbish was dropped at lunch because more food is eaten at lunchtime and there would be a bigger chance of rubbish flying out of their lunchboxes. Lunch food is also more likely to have wrappers. However we also inferred that people might deliberately litter so that they don’t get in trouble for walking to the bin - as we are not allowed to stand up during lunch eating time.

Under the classroom is also a common place to put rubbish. But the reason  that people drop rubbish there is because they think no one will notice. But we did! But if you think that you get away with it, then you are wrong because we see rubbish everywhere, even in sneaky places where people will think you can't see it.

Overall, 424 pieces of rubbish were dropped in the 45 minutes we were observing that day. That’s almost one piece of rubbish per person. If nobody ever picks this rubbish up, then by the end of the week there would be 2120 pieces of rubbish floating around the school.  Many people dropped their rubbish on purpose, but also accidentally, leaving it where they ate or hiding it.

We think if we all work together our school can be cleaner by just simply walking  to the bin, because just doing a simple thing like that will help to make a big difference. But we also think that during lunch eating time we should be allowed to stand up to walk to the bin to put our rubbish in it. We will be discussing this with the teachers. This means people will be less likely to throw it in the bushes, under the buildings, leave it where they were eating or just throw it on the ground.

We also plan to write to the board of trustees to see if we can have more bins built permanently into the areas that we’ve observed to gather the most rubbish. We also need bins that are the right size for younger kids as well.

So what is the most important thing for you to remember from today? Do not drop rubbish on purpose. It’s pretty simple.  Please walk the few metres to the bins, otherwise we will all be swimming in a pool of rubbish.

My speech was named “gender sports” because people get judged on what sport they play and it is a problem for some people. I    learnt lots about other sports while writing this speech and how it affects lots of people. I was learning how to structure a speech like how it starts with a rhetorical question and how to finish the speech. I think that my speech flows really well and all my ideas connect to the point of view and show factual information. I used several language devices to persuade the audience. I was taught to use the power of there and good ways to hook people into my story, and imperatives. For example, “Picture this I’m in a evil place that goes by the name school. See what I did there? I hooked you in just like that.
I was nervous performing speech but I was relieved once it was done.

Can you think of a girls sport? Maybe it’s netball, ballet, or synchronized swimming.  Or how about a boy’s sport? It could be rugby, boxing, or even american football.

Now is gymnastics a boy’s or girl’s sport? Think about it. Is there  really such thing as a boys sport and a girls sport? It’s really only that most boys prefer to play rugby and most girls prefer to play netball or ballet. These are opinions that lots of people have. Putting labels on people can stop our world's best sports players who could have turned into people like dan carter, valerie adams lidia co and more. It’s when people say “why do you play this sport it’s for girl’s or it’s for guys.” Then they might decide that they don't want to play this sport any more. A sport that can be judged in many different ways is gymnastics. Some people say that girls should only do this sport or I bet it's not that hard. Lots of arguments and people changing sport can come from these comments. But the bad thing is when this happens most people just carry on with their day. These are life changing moments people and it all  depends on are you going to stand up for them or just leave them in tears thinking about the nasty comments, trying to change themselves. People's lives can change by a simple word it could be in a good way or bad. Life gets hard when You think you have to hide your sport because you don’t want to get judged.

I hate it when people say these comments and how it makes them feel good after. My mum and dad once told me TREAT PEOPLE the same way you want to be treated. I know this is only a saying but if you really think about it it can really make a difference. I have some information that you can use if you ever notice someone doing this. You could say put yourself in their shoes, Why are you doing this? What did they ever do or say to you? or I bet you have a secret of you own. When you stick up for someone it will not only make them feel better but you as well. Sport has there ups and downs but when you love that sport so much you won't care what anyone says. But at any time you struggle just look for a friend.

One of my friends was at a hockey practices at a local park and a man walked by saying ‘dumb hockey players that game sucks its for girls.’ My friend felt really angry and it stopped him from having a good practice.

Sport is great because if we didn't exercise in a way that we enjoied we would all be fat and unhappy. But if you say they shouldn't play this specific sport just because they are a girl or a boy then you should have a long think. Sport is what keeps us fit and healthy but if you comment on what sport we play and it stops us, you could create a big problem.

Doing back flip of swing

This isn't good!
I wake up and all my friends are running around the camp site. They move rapidly towards the swings. Joe went and did a backflip off the swing.  So I say “teach me how to do that!” 
“OK” says Joe, “When you get to the front of the swing, just lean back.” 

At that point I feel like it's going to be to easy, so I get on and start swinging. I am at a good height now, so I lean back. I did it! My legs were doing who knows what but i still did it. That feeling when you land it is just awesome. 

A few turns later I’m doing them really well so I start doing backflips with straight legs. First try I do it perfectly. I start to try do the backflips while twisting. Then we have a dumb idea, but I still try it anyway. The dumb idea is to do it off the back of the swing.

I feel so nervous but no one can know. So I get on and I start swinging. 
I let go, lean back and say to myself ‘I'm gonna make it, I'm gonna make it…’ 
Bang! My face is covered in dirt, it's all scratched up but I still don't cry. I feel petrified! I clean myself up and continue my day. Now I have to try and build up my confidence to try it again.

My reflection…

In this piece of writing I learnt to write in the present tense, to have only one ‘and’ in every sentence, and write about one emotion. I wanted the reader to know I was writing about a sad/scared emotion.
 
I went well I because I put my writing in the present tense and my punctuation in all my sentences. To show the reader I was scared I said “I feel so nervous but no one can know.”

My next step is to use more descriptive words in my writing. To do that a will look in the dictionary, thesaurus or bright sparks book.

Arts refetiom

This term I have been learning about elements of music so I can communicate to anyone from any culture because music is a universal language. To show this learning I created a soundscape based on a poem I wrote.

My soundscape is multistructural because I have 3 elements and they all go well together. I used beat, rhythm and dynamics in my soundscape.  I used garagebands drums, guitar and voice modifier to represent parts of my Christchurch poem.
